"Tamera Alexander takes us to the Civil War battlefield with a vivid yet sensitive portrayal of war and its aftermath. With warmth and grace, she shows us hope and faith at work in the midst of suffering. The beautifully-drawn characters and rich history in With This Pledge work seamlessly to demonstrate that Christ's love and romantic love can triumph even in our darkest moments."--Lynn Austin, bestselling author of Legacy of MercyTamera Alexander is a USA Today bestselling author and one of today's most popular writers of inspirational historical romance. She lives in Nashville, Tennessee with her husband, not far from the Southern mansions that serve as the backdrop for many of her critically-acclaimed novels.
Good historical romance If one is contemplating purchasing a T. Alexander book , do it. Alexander is a good story teller and With This Pledge is one of her better books. I've read most of her works and enjoyed them all. Tamera does a good job drawing the reader into the Battle of Franklin during the Civil War. One can read the devastation and heart ache war brings and can comprehend the saying "War is Hell". This story is told from a Southern perspective however not once is slavery is acceptable .( Interesting to note there is more slavery today than in the time of the Civil War if one considers the atrocity of human trafficking and the sex slaves which exist today. ) This is a well told and researched story and in the end I was surprised to read that most of the characters were real and most of the letters were from actual letters from this battle and from it's victims. If one is looking for a GOOD historical clean romance set in the time of the Civil War I highly recommend this book.Awe-Inspiring! "She's given her pledge, and she's a woman of her word."The ravages of our nation's Civil War had reached the lovely Carnton estate; spreading death and destruction across the rolling hills of Tennessee as far as the eye could see, following the heinous battle of Franklin. Governess Elizabeth "Lizzie" Clouston's job quickly detoured from teaching students the basics of education to assisting a field doctor with the grizzly task of removing limbs and suturing indescribable wounds; the McGavock's fine home being populated with dozens of wounded soldiers.Among those brought to the estate for surgery is Captain Roland Jones, who with Lizzie's perseverance, convinces the army surgeon to save both of his legs, paving the way for a painstakingly slow road to recovery. In the meantime, their hearts begin to travel the path of attraction, only to be reminded that Lizzie is already betrothed to another and the dear captain remains convinced that owning one's fellow man is perfectly humane. It's an impasse that seems impossibly improbable to span."Freedom. Choices. Promises." In the author's own words, "these three themes run with vivid undercurrent through this story, just as they continue to run through our still too-divided country". Rich in character and resonating with the depth of history, "With This Pledge" is a story that offers a lasting tribute to those who fought to the death and to those who lived to make a difference. Please read this book There are no words I could use to tell you how much this book touched me deep inside. The characters are so real that I felt like I was drawn into the story. The horrific battle. And the rich descriptions of what happened there and what happened so quickly to the family and home of Carnton. The courage and compassion of the family and surgeons, the awful injuries to those wounded and died in the home. Their faith in God must be what got them through. And you can really see the dead on the battlefield and all that happened thru the eyes of those there. I stayed up many many nights because I couldn't put this book down. The characters became my friends and I could feel and see what they did. Tamera has written such a beautiful book. Whatever I write here cannot do it justice. I cannot comprehend the horror, and the amazing courage everyone had. I want to visit Carnton and Franklin, TN so badly. I truly hope there are more stories in this series. Thank you, Tamera, for drawing me into this story and pointing me to God.
